Beading Without Borders

Russia, Lithuania, Ukraine and the United States are the countries of the many women who form, “Beading Without Borders”, a coalition of talented beadwork artists being showcased at the Textures Gallery from December 8, 2005.

This diverse group of artists is represented by Lana May, who is currently an Arizona resident with a long history and a life devotion to the art of beading and design. Lana May’s interest in beads began in her very early years, sparked by her grandmother’s beaded bridal purse.
Lana studied design within a university setting, and later decided to pursue her own design firm, as well as, teach the art of bead craft. Today, Lana can be found teaching classes from her home and different areas in Arizona, beading her own intricate creations, and representing the many artists that form, “Beading without Borders.”

The artists of the group call many different countries home, but their dedication to the art of beading binds them together. Irina Astratenko from Lithuania uses crochet, knitting and embroidery to create beaded works.
While traveling to neighboring countries in search of new beading practices, Irina was introduced to “the magic world of ankars.” Ankars are beaded necklaces that form a design similar to lace.

Polyanskaya Albina from the Ukraine specializes in creating ethnic designs using ancient Slovenia beading techniques. Polyanskaya has been credited for representing the diversity of the Ukrainian seasons within the colors of her work. She is progressive and original in her designs.
Irina Belinsksja from Moscow has managed to thread together her love of nature and flora with her passion for beading. While these artists share a passion for beading, their work is unique in its execution, style and design.
